Beginner’s Levantine Colloquial Arabic

Colloquial Arabic is used in daily communication between people in the Arab world. Rooted in classical Arabic, it is simplified for daily use and infiltrated by non-Arabic worlds depending on the geographical location, external cultural and linguistic influences. This class will focus on the Levant dialect, which is spoken in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Palestine. This level is best suited for beginners who have had little or no exposure to the Arabic language. We will be covering the Arabic alphabet and explaining the differences in pronunciation between the modern standard Arabic and different dialects. We will also cover some basic conversational skills.

May NasrBuy music here
“Gratified, Elated, Exalted… Those are but few of the feelings you have when you hear her voice. That ‘noble’ voice which captures you, only to ‘free’ you from your own solicitudes. It summons you from beyond your deepest silence, carries you to the far reaches of your self, only to leave you there ‘waiting’. It mollifies your anxieties with its calmness, and uplifts your spirit with its liveliness. It exhorts one to make peace with one’s longings. May Nasr is a singer who serenely ‘sings our silences’.

Bassam Saba Ensemble Buy his music here
“Saba’s debut album, ‘The Wonderful Land,’ is a masterpiece, a compilation and caliber of work that could only emerge from one of such breathtaking ability, vast accomplishment, and years and years of rich life and world experience given voice to only now. An electrifying mix of classical Arabic and gypsy Turkish tradition infused with hints of western classical arrangement, each piece of Saba’s music paints a different picture of his life’s work, experience and travel. … With joy and energy come pieces such as Nirvana, a classical-contemporary Arabic suite which invites listeners to join an unfolding exploration of what could be an ancient Arabian palace, where mystery and intrigue give way to the discovery of a great celebration of music and dance.
